Asthma

Asthma is a disorder that causes the airways of the lungs to swell and narrow. Triggered by a host of lifestyle and environmental factors including animal dander, dust, exercise, respiratory infections, airborne carcinogens and even stress, asthma can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

Allergies are a major cause of pediatric and adult onset asthma. Allergen exposure can even cause an acute severe asthma attack that could result in death.

Dr. Hutto offers skin tests to asthma patients in order to identify which allergens cause a reaction. She then prescribes medications that can control allergen-induced asthma. These medicines can prevent progression of asthma and scarring of the lungs as a result of an uncontrolled situation.

Asthma can lead to chronic lung damage if not treated properly. Many patients with asthma find relief not only through medications but with allergy shots as well. The benefits of allergy shots include less asthma medications and less daily asthma symptoms. In some studies, allergy vaccines have been shown to prevent nasal allergies from progressing to asthma.

“With my son’s asthma now under control, he was the only sophomore to play on his varsity team and received his letter last week. He is still actively playing basketball, lifting weights and running—all of which he wouldn’t have been able to do without the help of Dr. Hutto. These days his inhaler sits on the shelf—right beside his trophies." Expand Testimonial

"Before going to Dr. Hutto, my son was on seven different meds, one of which was a steroid that had his weight up drastically. But after Dr. Hutto conducted tests on my son, she was able to reduce his meds down to only two. Our son has not had an attack since. He is getting regular allergy shots, taking his meds and following up on schedule. Because of all the help he received from Dr. Hutto and her staff, my son has been able to play active basketball again. His quality of life has been greatly enriched. He is now 16 years old, down to only one medication and getting his allergy shots. She is truly a blessing to not just our family, but to the medical field, her profession and this community.”

“I owe Dr. Hutto a lot of gratitude because without her medical plan and staff's support I would not have been successful in track and in my adult life. She allowed me to live my dream without allowing asthma or allergies to hinder my abilities." Expand Testimonial

"I was introduced to Dr. Hutto after I was hospitalized for a severe asthma attack when I was 13 or 14 years old. But despite my condition, I really wanted to be part of the track team when I got to high school. I had always dreamt about being a sprinter and figured running high school track was the way to purse my dreams. My parents were very hesitant about me pursing this extracurricular activity. However with my persistence and Dr. Hutto’s medical treatment, not only was I able to run track, but I won multiple invitational titles, state titles and was able to receive multiple track scholarship offers. I continued my running career at Campbell University, where I set numerous school records. Now, that I am in my 30s I still see Dr. Hutto and her staff because they remain so knowledgeable about asthma and allergies. They care about me. I owe Dr. Hutto a lot of gratitude because without her medical plan and staff's support I would not have been successful in track and in my adult life. She allowed me to live my dream without allowing asthma or allergies to hinder my abilities."

“Dr. Hutto helped me understand that asthma is the result of a progression of allergies over the years. I had no idea I was even allergic to as many things as I am. She also educated me about how the injections for allergies are really the only way to strengthen the immune system and make a real difference in the symptoms." Expand Testimonial

"I had asthma for 20 years before being referred to Dr. Lisa Hutto for allergy skin testing and eventual treatment. Prior to that, I had simply been treating the symptoms, which I believed was adequate. Dr. Hutto helped me understand that asthma is the result of a progression of allergies over the years. I had no idea I was even allergic to as many things as I am. She also educated me about how the injections for allergies are really the only way to strengthen the immune system and make a real difference in the symptoms. As a marathon runner, this simply seemed to be the only answer. I had already been running for years prior to becoming Dr. Hutto's patient. I had read that the lungs can be strengthened from running and other types of aerobic activity and my asthma did stabilize a great deal after I slowly increased my workouts. After receiving my treatments, it is much easier for me to run. I have more energy because my body isn't busy fighting off the allergens as much. Also, it is easier for me to run in different types of weather. In the past, I would have to acclimate very slowly to the changes in temperature or I would have difficulty breathing. I am truly glad to have found Dr. Hutto and her staff. The staff is kind, professional and extremely efficient. The injections are not painful and since allergies are on the rise and hereditary, I am taking my 12 year old to Dr. Hutto for an evaluation, so he will not have endure long term allergy symptoms."
